Frequently asked questions
How much does an artist studio cost in Brooklyn?
At Chinchilla, studios run $300 to $1,250 a month depending on size (65 to 360 sq ft) and whether they have a window, with WiFi and all utilities included. Like most studio buildings, the smallest units cost the most per square foot. The bigger the studio, the better the rate. Our largest spaces work out to under $3.50 per square foot, which is hard to beat in Brooklyn.
What’s included in the rent?
WiFi, electricity, heat, and water; access to slop sinks for cleanup; and freight access for moving work and materials (a freight elevator at 19th Street, a conveyor belt at 41st Street). You bring your practice, we handle the building.
What are the lease terms?
Six or twelve-month license agreements. We don’t offer month-to-month.
Can two or three people share a studio?
Yes. We have two- and three-person agreements for shared studios.
Do the studios have windows?
Some do. Windowed studios cost a bit more and tend to go faster; interior studios are the best value if natural light isn’t essential to your work.
What is the security deposit?
Two months’ rent.
Can I see a studio before renting?
Yes. Tours are 30 minutes and you can book one online. Join the waitlist and we’ll reach out as soon as a studio opens up.
Where are the buildings?
93 19th Street in Gowanus and 126 41st Street in Sunset Park, both in Brooklyn. Both are commercial buildings. These are private working studios, not live-work spaces.
